Madeline A. Dalton, a Dartmouth College professor, found that children as young as 2 notice and mimic the smoking behavior of their parents. Her study included a role-playing game that allowed preschoolers to choose from among 73 products in a mock grocery store. Twenty-eight percent of them walked away with cigarettes. That percentage, alarming in what it portends, is close to the rate of adult Hoosiers (25 percent) who continue to smoke. That's considerably above the nationwide smoking rate for adults (just under 21 percent), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
