State pushes campaign to help smokers quit | TheNewsTribune.com | Tacoma, WA.
Concerned by recent studies indicating the combined stresses of the holidays and the economic downturn are increasing tobacco use, anti-smoking groups are stepping up efforts to help smokers kick the habit. The state Department of Health has initiated a media campaign to draw attention to a state-sponsored program that hands out free nicotine patches and nicotine gum. “We know the tough economy is hitting people hard,” secretary of health Mary Selecky said recently. “It’s another good reason for those who smoke to try quitting. It will improve their health and they’ll save money at the same time.”
