For most of the last 15 years, the Food and Drug Administration's authority to regulate tobacco has been either a thwarted promise or a fitful threat, depending on your point of view.
It has been pressed by anti-smoking crusaders and public health groups, put on hold by the Supreme Court and beaten back repeatedly by the tobacco industry and its political allies. Last year, the latest such proposal was left for dead after President Bush threatened he would veto a measure, passed by the House of Representatives, if it made its way to his desk.

A year after Iowa's statewide smoking ban took effect, one bar owner who worried the ban would sink his business has changed his tune.
Last year, Blues on Grand's Jeff Wagner marked the final hours of smoking by handing out free smokes. His bar had waitresses dressed as communists, offering a tongue-in-cheek resistance to the government intervention.
"I have to go into this optimistic," Wagner said at the time. "I love this place."

The New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) warned on Saturday that smoking could cut your life short by 15 years.
NZMA Acting Chairman Paul Ockelford said an international study on mortality from smoking estimates that worldwide, long-term smokers who die from a smoking-related illness, die an average of 15 years early.

The White House has been opaque about whether Barack Obama has quit smoking, as he promised his wife, Michelle, when she agreed to a presidential race. During the campaign, reporters occasionally saw him mooching a cigarette off an aide, but now that he’s president, he’s only seen when he wants and how he wants.
