Everyone knows that we all would be better off if no one smoked. It would prevent a lot of premature deaths and save a lot of money on medical and insurance bills. And it's nice to enjoy a nice piece of salmon in a good restaurant without having to inhale someone's second-hand smoke.
But telling someone to quit who is at risk of getting his or her tail shot off or walking by an exploding car might be too much. So, the Pentagon told its troops Wednesday that it won't ban tobacco products in war zones.

If you're a smoker who wants to become an ex-smoker, your insurance may soon help you pay the cost of kicking the habit.
Oregon is about to become the seventh state in the country to require that health insurers include smoking cessation as a covered benefit. Under Senate Bill 734, which passed the Legislature and awaits Gov. Ted Kulongoski's expected signature, insurance policies must reimburse enrollees 15 or older up to $500 for a "tobacco use cessation program" — education or medical programs to help quit the use of cigarettes or chewing tobacco.

Using a nicotine patch before quitting smoking can double success rates, according to Duke University Medical Center researchers. They say their latest data suggest changes should be made to nicotine patch labeling.
"Right now, the nicotine patch is only recommended for use after the quit date," explains Jed Rose, PhD, director of the Duke Center for Nicotine and Smoking Research and lead author of the paper that is published online in the current issue of the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research.
