Big Tobacco is at it again. Once more they are spinning falsehoods and fabrications about Proposition 29. The claim made by Big Tobacco that the funds generated from Proposition 29 will not be used in California is just wrong. It is ironic that this patently false claim is being delivered by self-interested out-of-state tobacco companies. Both the explicitly stated purpose of the measure and the composition of the commission ensure that funds will stay in California.

The Illinois House has agreed to raise tobacco taxes by $1 a pack as part of a plan to strengthen the state Medicaid program.
The tax increase passed Friday with a vote of 60-52, but it now must face the Senate. The senate has backed similar increases in the past, according to the Associated Press.

Nicotine-free plastic inhalers -- fake cigarettes that allow people to simulate smoking -- may increase some smokers’ odds of quitting smoking, a study shows.
Unlike electronic or "e-cigarettes," the nicotine-free inhalers are billed in Europe as aids for people who are trying to quit smoking that can be used in conjunction with nicotine replacement, drugs for smoking cessation, and counseling.

The nation's largest tobacco company is planning to test market in Virginia a new and unusual smokeless consumer product containing nicotine but no tobacco.
Altria Group Inc., the parent company of cigarette maker Philip Morris USA, announced Tuesday that the new product — a chewable, spit-free, oral product called Verve — will be available at 50 to 100 Sheetz convenience stores in Virginia starting in early June.
