World Cancer Day 2012 – Kick butt!

The detrimental effects of smoking are well-documented.Cigarettes contain 69  carcinogens and smoking is one of the major causes of lung cancer for active and passive smokers. It is our duty to kick the butt not only for our own well-being but for our near and dear ones who are inhaling second-hand smoke. Smoking has no moral defence and it is our responsibility to ensure that we stop endangering ourselves and our loved ones.

Smoking Out The Tobacco Urge

Naomi Ohayon, a 52-year-old mother of four, smoked for over 30 years until she quit the habit — hopefully for good — a month ago. “I’d tried just about every stop-smoking program out there,” Ohayon said from her home in the southern city of Beersheva. “Once, I quit for three days, the other times I couldn’t stop at all.”

Ohayon, who has asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), said she became increasingly motivated to kick the habit as her health deteriorated.

Letter: Smoker in her late 90s risks eviction

A friend of mine who tuned 97 in June and is partially blind called to tell me she has been given 30 days to quit smoking or she will be evicted from her home.

She has lived at the Lakes of Pointe West for about six years now. She was a smoker when she moved there and management knew that.

She is terribly shaken by this and is nervous and very upset — not a good thing if you are in your late 90s.

How is this morally possible? This must not be allowed. What has happened to our once great country? Have we gone so politically correct that we allow our elderly to be sacrificed?

Many Still Smoking After Cancer Diagnosis

Smoking is a famously unhealthy habit — one that’s just as famously difficult to kick.

But approximately 46 million Americans still light up, and, according to a new study, many of them continue to do so despite knowing they have cancer.

For the study, published online in the American Cancer Society journal CANCER, researchers observed 2,456 people with lung cancer and 3,063 people with colorectal cancer. At the time of diagnosis, 38 percent of the lung cancer patients were smokers, and so were nearly 14 percent of the colorectal cancer patients.

Throat doctors manipulated by Big Tobacco

For half a century beginning in the 1920s, tobacco companies continued a campaign to manipulate throat doctors – primarily with money – into helping calm the public’s growing fears that smoking might not be good for you.

Most shocking about this was that many of the most well-respected leaders in the field of otolaryngology got on board with this campaign – testifying before Congress, recommending certain brands of cigarettees to their patients – into the 1970s when the scientific evidence pointing to the hazards of smoking had become overwhelming.

Tobacco Ban Might Be Igniting Ohio Prison Violence

Ohio’s prisons have become increasingly violent since March 2009, when the state enacted a tobacco ban, and the state’s prison director thinks there may be a connection. Director Gary Mohr of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction told the Dayton Daily News he is launching a study to determine whether the tobacco ban is stirring problems in the state’s prisons, where violent disturbances have doubled.
